$500 problem???

ORIGINAL: 94 Casper 5.0

In the past 2 months my car has lost alot of top end power, and its pinging hard ect. i finally took it to the shop, and the guy said i had a clogged EGR. told me it was gonna run me about $450-$500. Thats going to put a huge dent in my future mods. but i have a few questions about that.
#1 what exactly is a EGR
#2 does this price sound resonable
#3 is there anyway i could clean it wit maybe some carb cleaner or something.(wit very little knowledge)
#4 how much would a new one cost

sorry for the long post but i had to talk to you guys before i through my money for gears and headers out the window.
1) Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve
2) No, way too high
3) Usualy you can clean it by removing it and using a carb cleaner soaked rag or cotton swabs then putting it back on with a new gasket
4) New one...check www.rockauto.com or your local auto parts store.
On a side note you could have a shop do a quick vacuum test on it once it's off the car to make sure it's okay. THey hook up a vacuum pump to the nipple and hand pump a vacuum to see if it will hold suction.

Just take it off and clean it yourself. I just did it, it's simple. My car still runs like *** though.

the tube running from the egr to the back for the heads gets pludded up too..you cant clean the holes going in to the exhast ports ,,you got to pull heads and get them redone ,,and hot tanked to work right...so cleaning the egr itself might not work if you air compressor blow air into the pipe going to the back of the heads to see if plugged ,,not alot of pressure you blow some carbon out in your cylinder..

ok i reset my timing to 14* the car seems to be a little peppier. I'm waiting on my Haynes book so i can clean out the egr valve, and the TB. Thanks for all the help guys.
