And I have an update btw! The guy that might be selling me his 1986 5.0 did not do a conversion. I had him mixed up with another guy I was talking with. So this is what he said:

"the v8 is the stock engine from 1986... it is all orioginal has 45k miles ont he whole car... this is not a swapped mustang. the gears are whatever they came with stock in 1986. 2.73 i believe or 3.07's and it does have the factory posi."

The body looks like its in excellent condition too. I will be checking it out soon hopefully. And he is going to send me some shots of the interior and engine bay. I will keep you guys posted. But how does that sound? Seems like very low miles!

Come back here when you get what his asking price is. You don't see low mileage Fox's at all these days hardly. If the price comes up decent, I'd grab it and baby it forever. Haha.

I tell you what, I have an 86 and I love it. You can do the same thing with the 86 as you do with the 87-93s. All you have to do is convert it to MASS air which isn't hard at all if yo uwant t omod the engine a lot. I did it when I built my stroker for it.

In FACT, when I did the 5 lug/4 wheel disc conversion, I got away with not buying as many parts because it was an 86 or older, IE I didn't have to modify the e-brake handle assembly or get an adjustable center cable becuase it came with one from the factory where as the 87+ had self adjusting ones. And I just had to get a larger diameter master cylinder since I didn't have to do the 3-2 port conversion.

I upgraded the rear quarter windows to the 87+ because they look better, and the front end is unique being a 4 eye, plus it doesn't look like a Taurus IMO. I'm not saying I wouldn't own an 87+ though.

Well thanks everyone so far for the help. I am going to keep you all posted with what I wind up doing. I know that he did a front bumper upgrade and go rid of the 4 eye........I kinda wish he still had it on though But its still not bad for the low mileage. I really want to jump on this. So from what I am hearing from all of you........that it really doesn't matter if I get an 86 Fox. I can still have plenty of options to mod the engine eventually?

an 86 is identical to an 87+ except for surface cosmetics and slightly better engine, besides that all parts for an 87+ fit on a 86 and earlier

A lot of parts (most in fact)1979 to 1993 are interchangeable as far as chassis and suspension you just have to read a little on some things. ( Ie. dual exhaust on 86 and older requires a trans crossmember off 87-93 car) So some minor adjustment will need to be made in a few small cases. I think 79-to like 81 are the only foxes that are a bit different suspension wise but cant be quoted on that. if the engine has multiport fuel injection you are really good to go, as 87-93 engine parts for the top of the motor are plentiful. bottom end its all just 302 small block ford stuff. Speed density sucks, mass air set up iis much better but carb is fun if you like to read cab tuning manuals (i like that kind of stuff). Welcome aboard. Im new here as well. Good Luck!

To 86 5.0L - thanks for your help!

To 1RED87 - As long as most stuff is interchangeable I should have no problem I suppose then. Do you know if the 1986 5.0 is considered to be "speed density" then? Because I will want to convert it to a mass air eventually............to ad a s/c I imagine.
And welcome as well man! lol

Yeah 86 though 88 was speed density systems. Just look for the mass air flow in between the air box and throtle body. To convert youll need a mass air flow sensor a harness from a 89-93 5.0 and the computer as well.

So besides the MAF sensor and harness, will I need a new air filter? (which I would want to get anyways) And how expensive are these computers? Do they need to be reflashed? Like with a tuner?

as far as the ECU you need an MAF ecu popular one is an A9L ecu, they can 'learn' alot of mods and dont require flashing with a tuner

for the air filter just get a K&N drop in filter and remove the air silencer
