Angry new 306 wont start..

ok, refreshed block +.30bored, re-lathed and balanced stock crank, rods, +.30 forged pistons (new), ford racing z303 (.552 lift i think) cam and bearings, cran cam springs, locks etc on stock heads to fit cam (i told C&N performance here in vegas which cam and heads i had and they built these heads around that cam... hopefully), edelbrock rpm2 upper and lower, high flow oil pump, 70mm tb & egr, 70mm mass air sens. stock injectors and fuel rail, stock rockers, new lifters.....

First crank after bolting in the new motor it turned right over but ran a little rough, like the timing was off. as i started to adjust the timing by hand and ear i lost the timing and the motor died out and wont start back up... it sounds so close like it wants to start up. ive tried checking to see if it was 180ed out and it wasnt, i have spark, fuel and air, im not sure exactly where to time this cam at and ive also had this cam run under stock stock heads and intake.... ive been scratching my head over this problem for days and i cant get the damn thing to start back up. Does anyone have any other idea's? i really need another brain besides mine wraped around this... any little advise would help, ive also tried bumping the wires aswell as the rotor and no improvements from that. am i missing something?

you need to have number 1 at tdc then stab the dizzy correctly and when you are ready to set the timing make sure spout is out and you have a light.

i'll never understand why people try to time their engines by ear.
a couple millimeters turn of the dizzy and you've moved your timing almost 10 degrees. its near impossible to do correctly by ear.

mjr46.... what do you mean spout? ... is that the little fuse next to the dizzy's wire harnest?

i do have it tdc and it seems like it wants to turn over but wont....

delmatt.... i am using a light as well, but when you have poor eyesight you tend to use your hearing more than youde think. good lookin out tho, and yea it is a pain in the *** to nail your timing down that way but im using what i got.

Yes, yo uneed to pull the SPOUT plug before dialing in the timing, otherwise it will be all over the place when you try and set it since the computer will be constantly adjusting it. Double check the stabbing of the distributor, pull the SPOUT, and finalize the timing.

86HOGT.... im going to try that... when i got it to start when i dropped the motor in the fuse was out and we tried to adjust the dizzy and it killed the motor. than my roomate said that that spout comes out after you get it fired to adjust the timing. so weve been trying to start it this whole time with that fuse in.

on another note... to verify tdc on the intake stroke or whatever, where should the intake valve and exhaust valves be? intake open, exhaust close etc etc... i cant remember that for the life of me.
