Will it hurt anything if I let it idle up to temp, just to make sure its not a lifter that needs oil?
It could save me from pulling the upper intake again....
I was talking about the small hole on each of the hyd lifters, where the oil enters the lifter. Should they all face up or down? I didnt look when taking them out, and re-installed them facing up.

the outside body has a slanted hole, the rest of it slides inside the outside body, there is a hole on the inside part, those holes need to be lined up, if the holes are not lined up, oil can not get in or out, (the oil does not go in from the top where the pushrod sits if thats what ur thinking of) so if you have the holes away from each other, the lifter is collapsed or if you filled it with oil, it might not bleed down. either way it sounds like your going to have to pull the intake...

Thx, ill run it up to temp and see if that fills the lifter and quiets things down, once my 45 degree plug wires get here. I had the lifters uninstalled for about a week, some may have leaked some oil. I'll probably have to re-adjust the rocker arms once they fill up again in a week or so.

ha ha, i have to say you are right, at school today the teacher was talking about the lifters and he said that it didnt matter where the hole went, pressure goes through the hole thing. you are correct sir!

Actually that sounds EXACTLY like the rocker hitting the baffle inside the valve cover. Almost a sure thing if it has roller rockers, even with a stock cam, been there, done that. I had to modify my baffle a bit on my '90 Stang years ago after that learning experience. It will make a little mess but start the thing up with that cover off for just a minute and see if it goes away. Good luck.
In case it turns out to be your lifters Here's the problem I'm having with mine...
I have a kindof similar problem on my '85 Roller motor in my '65 but I'm almost positive it's lifters in my case. Lifter noise at start-up and even a bit of a miss-fire until they pump up, then the noise goes away completely. It usually takes a minute or so at 2000 rpm and it does the trick, until I shut it off for a few minutes, then it's back in most cases. I took off the valve covers and all except 3 or 4 of my lifters are bled down when not running for a few minutes (only sat long enough for me to spin off the valve cover bolts and the cover), and you can depress them all with one finger. NOT GOOD. Interesting how the noise is almost gone after running for a while with the rpm's up.
Sometimes the ticking goes away for a few days but it always comes back. The problem seems to be getting worse/more frequent, not better. Someone told me I could try a thicker oil. I'm running 10/30 Mobil 1 synthetic and maybe I'll try 15/50 just for giggles to see if it keeps the lifters pumped up. I know synthetic tends to be thinner. Curious if anyone has had luck with the thicker oil idea. I'm probably just going to replace the lifters though since I've been told it's a common problem for them to go bad. Mine has 1.7 rockers and an aftermarket cam so I'm sure the lifters aren't happy, assuming they are just stock. I didn't build the motor so I don't know for sure, however the last time I took off the intake they looked stock, nothing special.

(don't mean to hi-jack your thread, hopefully we can both get some advice here)
..I do think your problem is the rocker contacting the baffle inside the valve cover. Good luck.
Happy Thanksgiving.
...UPDATE, I've decided to change cams and new lifters anyway on my setup. If I find anything new or if I still have a problem after the swap I'll keep you guys posted.
