Default 1988 2.3l 289 swap

I have a 1988 mustang and i recently bought a 65 289. i need to know if there is any thing that i need to buy or change to make it fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What would be the best setup for my car in way of parts.

timing cover swap, cam will be incompatible with efi, rear sump pick up needed and pan, water pump for 5.0 needed and heads will not have any provisions for emissions, and the motor is 28 oz balance so you'll need a 28 oz flywheel if it is a 5 spd car, if your going carbed cam won't be an issue but if going efi, just fine an h.o motor ready to go

actually it will work!

we just put 5.0l efi on my friends 65 fairlane w/ a 289
all u have to do is:
run the plug wires in the order for the 289's cam(diff from the 5.0l ho's)
the dist module will figure it out and change the injector order and stuff it will run perfect the might pop for like 5 seconds when u try to start it the first time then it will fire up
run perfectly
i promise

Since you will be buying a new water pump (...right?) make sure it works with the radiator inlet/outlets
one positive with the 289 cam and timing cover is that you can simply go mech. fuel pump

IIRC the 5.0 serpentine system will bolt on 99% IIRC one or two mounting holes (block, heads) will either be sized differently or in one place instead of another but no big deal

Im 99.9% sure you are fine on this other point but again IIRC there is a pretty much nonexistant possibility that the bell pattern might be a 5 bolt design but it should be only older years but I included it here becuase you didnt provide a casting # so wanted to cover bases...if its 5 bolt pattern you're pretty much screwed.

Ignition you should get a billet MSD or simply and cheaply you can get a reman duraspark (used on 1984 mustang for example) its pretty much the points dizzy casting that ford used a hall effect trigger with. There's tons of reading on it I got mine at autozone for $30, and the control module for $20 and got it set up at performance distributor for (AGAIN) IIRC $45 ... they removed the vaccum advance and curved it for nitrous, short early advance
