Head Gasket?
alright, put my new motor together and it runs really nice but it heats up really fast and would probly over heat if i kept it running. so i checked the coolent level and left the cap off and started it and it shot out the radiator, didn't kno if that was a sign of anything. it doesn't smoke and starts and runs fine. i'm too frustrated to even work on it what do you guys think it is
did u purge all of the air out of the coolant. If u just installed a new engine, u need to let the car warm up with the radiator cap off and open the thermostat and let all of the air escape. If there is still air in the cooling system it will overheat. See if this works for u. Check ur oil and make sure it is not milky, that would be an indication of a blown head gasket, or oil in ur coolant.
the oil and the coolent look really good, no mixing of the 2. i've done a couple thermo's already so i'd be surprised if i put it in backwards but i mean its always possible. I'll try that next time its cold starting it w/ the cap off, thanks
It could be the head gasket. I had the same problem and had no symptoms with mixing coolant and oil. Mine didn't white smoke until I drove it on the freeway for a few miles and then it was over. White smoke all over the place-out of the tailpipes. This was the day I had my motor all pur back together. I hope its not though-good luck. You can get it compression tested to see if a headgasket if blown.
First do a compression test...if that comes out ok it shouldn't be your headgasket, if your compression numbers are low then the next step would be to do a block test, this entails using a block tester. The block tester fits in the top of the radiator while the car is running, if there are any combustion gases in the cooling system the liquid in the block tester turns yellow. After that you could do a leakdown test to pinpoint exactly where it is leaking from(ie which cylinder). Hope this helps and good luck.
