if it is a mass air coar yes but if it is speed density it will not. the speed density cars are set to a specific cam rate. the air and fuel is a fixed amount in comparsion to the cam. You can convert it over to mass air pretty easy.

i also have an 88 Gt but the cali edition so it came stock w/ mass air. my buddy from Tx came down and we have the basicly the same mods done.. i dont know if my driving ability was a factor but i SMOKED him by about a length and 1/4.. mass air if deff. the way to go... not an expensive conversion and well worth it. i believ its around 250-300$

I haven't looked into it much, but it sounds like all you're doing is adding a MAF to the intake, then adding a conversion box that interprets the signals so the stock EEC can understand. But to me it would be better to get the EEC out of a mass air car (junkyard?) and add the sensor. Perhaps it doesn't make a bit of difference.
