Personally, I think you're not going to see much better times on a slick, if any at all. The car is just going to bog. Get yourself a drag radial. You need way more torque than you're making for a slick.

If he's running 3.73's and has a decent launch RPM he should be fine, providing he's using 26 inch slicks. I woulnd't recommend 28 inch slicks because it could bog some due to the effective numerical decrease of the rear end ratio...I ran full slicks back in the day without much more mods than him and did fine.
