Default Temp Sensor

Hey every1, I have a issue with my temp gauge not working properly for example driving down the highway temp reading fine then drops right down and stays there for a while then shoots up to normal temp. Sometimes it wont read at all so Im thinking its a bad sensor but Ill try the fuse first. It wouldnt be the thermostat would it? THX for any help.
