Default Rear rotor replacement, noticed large amount of axle play....WTF?

SN95 1995 GTS. New factory sized slotted and drilled rotors, new rear calipers, replaced because of obnoxious squeaking that never stopped on passenger (LH) side.
New pins, total brake rebuild on rear.
While rotors were off noticed the axles on both side have .5" play in and out?
WTF?
Now with the fresh rotors, (thicker) the pass side is rubbing the caliper bracket.
again......WTF?
is this a rear end replacement?
I am a newly converted chevy owner....now loving my stang.
Do fords have C clips?
what needs to be done to correct this?
anyone else had this problem?
Thanks in advance!

well from my expierieince as a mechanic id say either the c clips are worn or the rear diff may need a rebuild and if i were u id jus buy a new diff unit its gonna run you about the same as a good rear end rebuild

the rear diff would have NOTHING do to with this problem. I also ran into an issue where my new rotors were rubbing on my caliper bracket. they seemed to sit outward further than the old ones. All I did was use two small washers and shimmed the bracket further outward. after you do this, you MUST check your wheel clearance. My prostars rubbed on my caliper slightly after doing so.

and it is normal to have a little bit of play in the axles... in and out is ok, up and down, or back and fourth.... really bad

Yeah this isn't the first time someone freaked out because their axles moved in and out. It's the nature of the semi-floating axle.

actually the clutches in the posi were worn completely out. and semi floating....1" in and out, c'mon bro. and the only change was 1995 rear rotors removed...new factory thickness installed, and all of a sudden my rotars are being eaten down by the caliper bracket making the car undriveable?
So another 2 to 3 weeks of driving and the c-clips would have went bye-bye as would my axle.
seriously, with the pinion snubber (small shaft) in I could almost remove the c-clips.
