Default Timing and what not

Just got the stang running yesterday after some down time. Put a new upper intake gasket on and some new vacuum lines. It's running but VERY poorly. It'll idle but has NO throttle response and won't rev past like 3k. Sounds like some plugs aren't firing or something. I checked all the plug wires and they all seem to be good, Firing order I have 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8, that correct for a 91 roller motor? That could be fouled plugs right? Car runs SUPPPPERR rich, though it used to run fairly well, but it's been a lot of cranking and doin this and that, so they were pretty soaked.

Also, I set the base timing at around 14, then I shut it off, connect the spout, check it again and it's up over 20, is that normal?

Make sure that you have all of the hoses hooked up and in the right place.Check engine light on?

I don't think so, though I don't really pay attention to it. My car has issues with electrical stuff. I can't get it to flash my codes or anything, so I tend to assume that my check engine light isn't something worth relying on.

change your plugs. double check your timing. does it have bad gas in it?

Tank was about empty, so I dumped in like 3 gallons of 91. I've never had a problem with bad gas anytime with anything I own, so I don't really think that's the problem, though I guess it's always possible.

I'll change the plugs for sure.

Hmm... Changed my plugs, Messed with my timing a whole bunch and still can't get it to run good at all. It's still got NO throttle respone, and it's popping a lot and shootin flames out the exhaust (open headers ATM)

Any ideas?

Sounds like a MAF problem.Something is telling the computer to crank up the fuel.I have seen the engine temp sensor on a GM read like -41 degrees because it had failed and that was a in paramterers failure that caused massive over fueling.
Hope this helps

I've read your article, it was very helpful. I tried restabbing it a few times. My problem that I found is it seems that my timing pointer is not in the right spot. If I check my TDC by sticking a coat hanger through the plug hole, I'll get it to TDC and check the timing pointer, and it says something that's not 0*, though I can't remember what it said exactly. So I set the initial timing going off the coat hanger method, figuring I'd get it close enough to run and then just play with it from there to get it running decent. No matter where I adjust it though, it won't run any better.

The timing pointer has like 1/4" of play side to side when you loosen the bolts, so I'm not sure how I can accurately get it set to TDC.

BTW... The car already runs pig rich due to not having o2 sensors, but it was always like this. It used to run pretty dam good and it's never had them. So this overly rich state is not what's causing it to run poor (IMO)
