fast idle/red hot headers
i have a 95 gt which had the idle jump to 2000 rpms, the headers turn red hot after about 3 min run time.the codes came up for mas & egr ireplaced them cleared the codes and it still does it .the only code i get now is egr.help

fast idle/red hot headers
I had a 96 Trans Am and the manifolds were getting red hot and it turned out to be my catalytic converters were stopped up. But a high idle was not a symptom if mine. Still yet, you may want to get your converters checked out. That could be your problem.

fast idle/red hot headers
I have a 95 gt with the exact same problem right now!! My check engine light is not coming on . I have talked to atleast 20 different "mustang guys" localy and I have gotten something different from each one .. some say mass air (nope) Idle air control valve (nope) 02 sensors (nope) eger (nope) vacuum leak (nope) so I am thinking that it is going to be the computer. I have Exhausted my efforts! it has 135K on the car and I havent had a lick of trouble with until about 2 months ago, and I just HATE even thinking about taking it to someone to do the repair because i am broke and I always do my own work. well if you find out something quicker than me PLEASE let me know

fast idle/red hot headers
EGR problems are a real pain. They use exhaust gasses to get a reading and keep mixture correct. If you're leaking exhaust (headers or elsewhere)the EGR doesn't get enough of the gases, and therefore speeds up the idle to obtain the right amount. If your EGR is all good, then it's most likely your O2 sensors, not sending the right info, or your MAS not reading correctly.

Here's the fix. This is a real common problem with 95s. I replaced the EGR twice within 2 months because I screwed stuff up. But your problem lies in a vacuum leak somewhere or the EGR no being connected snugly. Check vacuum lines by spraying a little soapy water on them - if the idle changes or you see bubbles, you know thats the problem - or take them off and plug the ends and blow through to see if air is comming out where its not supposed to. When you start the car, check to see if everything is right in terms of hookups around the EGR, and that no air is leaking out of the top or bottom of the EGR tube. Which reminds me, you may want to see if the tube isnt cracked somewhere under the heat shield. When they get old they get really brittle. The egr is pressurizedand definately the cause of your problems in terms of idle, and you might have a bad EGR sensor as well. When you put new EGRs in, it isn't really easy to make it work the first time, because they're really touchy. You could also try putting some high heat RTV compound inside the nuts on the EGR tube to seal up any leaks.
