Default Speedometer Cable

I just picked up an 87 GT and noticed that the speedometer, while erratic (it bounces a lot), also makes an extremely irritating sound the faster the car goes. Today the speedometer started to sit around 15 mph, even when the car was at a dead stop.

From my past experience, it would seem that the speedometer cable needs to be replaced. Having never done this before, I was wondering if there is a tutorial out there and if anyone has tips to make the process go smoother. Also, recommended parts websites are appreciated.

got my speedo off ebay... check for the one you need (SIZE)

take the dash apart...
run the cable...
put the grease that comes with the cable into the speedocable...
hook it up in the back of the gauge and under the car...
make sure the cable is not touching any hot parts like the headers...
It will take a day or two to work the grease down the cable(so it will be stiff till then) but after that should work fine...

Thanks for the reply.

I've got an 87' 5.0 AOD; when you say check for the size, what are the different variables that dictate which cable I will need?

Well, I definitely have cruise control, so that leaves me with either a 71" or 92".

Is there any way to know which one I need without first removing the part from my car?

It should be a 71.
