Default Oil Pressure

What is the oil pressure for a 5.0 from a '98 Explorer when at operating temp?

It varies depending upon RPM and oil viscosity. Higher oil pressure means more resistance to oil flow - so higher is not necessarily better.

With the recommended 5W-30 at 1700 RPMs. I'm asking what the NORMAL oil pressure is for a '98 Explorer with a 5.0 at cruising speed and operating temp with the factory recommended weight oil.

normally the rule of thumb for engine builders is to get 10psi of pressure per 1000 rpm at load/normal operational temp (212F normally). If you are running the right oil for your motor (not always what the manual calls for) if you are getting anything from 8-15psi per 1krpms i would not worry about it. Also make sure your oil gauge is working right.

40-60 psi at 2k rpm is the ford spec at opperating temp (190-210 F) with specified oil grade.

The 10 psi per 1000 rpm rule no longer applies in today's world of engines, thats old school muscle car verbage.

ahh ok that make sence, i got the 10psi per 1k out of an old spec book on building an FE motor. Not too suprised that they have gotten better oiling ideas in the newer motors.
