Default Overheats, loss of power, then dies.

Hey guys. One of my friends has an 88 gt. As he was driving on the freeway tonight, it suddenly overheated, lost power and eventually stalled. He said that as he pulled over it was making a tapping sound. He did get it started again, but it's running terrible and there's a noticeable light knocking coming from the rear of the engine on the drivers side. I thought that it might be a lifter but
Im not 100% sure. Anyone have any ideas.

Well he's not leaking antifreeze from anywhere. I checked the oil and there's no coolant in there either. Could a lifter cause that loss of power? I'll call him tomorrow and get some more info.

I had that problem with a 84 escort--same thing you described-- but when the mechanic looked at it he told me that my water pump must of been leaking real bad while I was driving because all the antifreeze leaked out of the engine,it then overheated and seized a piston. I hope for your sake that's not what happened to you!

Actually the radiator is still full of coolant but his fan doesn't spin freely. I wonder if his water pump bearings seized up and caused the engine to overheat, leading to engine damage.

The fan not spinning freely is normal if you still have the belt on. Do a comp. test. Also pull the valve covers to see whats going on under there.
