Default Setting timming

I am working on my new to me 90 lx . I am tring to set the timing and I put the inductive pick up on number 1 plug wire and set the dial to 10* and the mark is no were to be found. I did unplug the spout. It is about 180* out. Any Ideas what could be wrong?

did you clean up the balancer and make a preliminary mark where u want to set it? with the age of our cars, its gonna be impossible to see any markings on it unless you've already make some mark on them to identify.

Yea if you didn't clean it there is no way you're going to be able to see the markings.

Yup either a wire wheel or scuff it with a very fine piece of sand paper and you should be able to read the numbers with no problem.
