how much gain from a good port N polish

RE: how much gain from a good port N polish
Heres the thing though, after a port job you should have a good valve job done, that will cost about $100-150 and I would also mill the heads for a little more compression, so thats another $60-$80. I still like the idea of you doing it yourself though, it's a good learning experiance and kind of fun, but if you really want alot more power then even a stock GT40 head will out flow a ported E7, and one other thing about GT40's is that they never really lose much value. I would say get the best that your budget allows.

I wouldn't say you NEED to have a valve job done after porting, I would say it depends on the condition of the heads in question. But ideally you would want a valve job if you do any bowl work so it will blend the bowl work better with the valve angle and so on. For a beginner though I would stay away from any kind of bowl work, stick with port matching and removing the emmisions hump on the exhaust side. If you going to polish anything, polish the combustion chamber to ward off carbon build up. The intake ports need to be somewhat rough to promote better fuel atomization, if they are polished the fuel will puddle. There are alot of good headporting articles and how to's on the net. The link below has porting specifically for Ford heads.
