Default Problem removing bellhousing

For some reason I can't get the bellhousing off the engine block. It's a 1993 5.0 with a T5. All the bolts are removed, front and back of the bellhousing. Chilton's says there are two dowels on each side of the bell housing, that's all that's left. I've marked the dowels in red on the photos. Are these the dowels? I've checked the front and back of the dowels and they're aren't any bolt heads or allen wrench heads on them so I'm assuming they're press fit. Any ideas?

Yeah, those are the dowels. You may have to get a screw driver in between the 2 pieces to pry them apart.

Yeah the starter is out. After 30 minutes with a rubber mallet it's slowly starting to come off. I'm letting the WD-40 work its way into the dowel holes and I'll give it another go. Thanks for everyone's help. I was pretty sure those were the dowels but with all the surprises this car has had I wouldn't be shocked if the previous owner had busted off a couple of bolt heads and just left the bolts in there.

FWIW, WD40 ISNT a lubricant... its a water dispersant..

you should be using a penetrant like PBlaster

Sea Foam makes DEEP CREEP. Spray that on and will fall off by itself. About $12 a can. Use it on well drilling rig lots of mud, water, and rust.

Two recommendations for PBlaster is good enough for me. It's already on my "to buy" list for my next run to the store. I did finally manage to get the bell housing off, along with the pressure plate and flywheel, but then I ran into my next hurdle.

Leaking oil pan gasket

I would just clean it all down really well and not worry about it to much right now and monitor the leakage, it won't be any more work later........but do replace the rear main seal while your in there
