Default Fuel pump issue

Hey, got kind of a wierd question here. I had a JEGS 95 GPH electric fuel pump in my 86 lx. It was regulated @ 6 psi with no return to the gas tank. Well it ran great for about 3 months, it was always loud but it did the job on the street. So I took the car to the local 8th mile strip and made about 5-6 passes when I started smelling a burning smell, didnt know where it was coming from. So I was coming back on the return road to the pit when my engine stalled , long story short I pulled the fuel pump off @ the track, removed the power cap and found that it nearly caught fire on me. My question is what would cause that? Is it just a faulty pump or could something else cause it to burn up that quick?
