AOD shuddering, engine idling rough...
Last night as I was driving around a turn, the Mustang began shuddering violently. When I drove it to the mechanic from where I had to leave it, I was forced to drive at 20mph with it locked in first. If I put it in drive it would drive ok in first and second, but shudder once it hit third at just over 20 mph. Since I couldn't lock it in second, I was forced to drive in first doing 20mph at 2000rpms. The engine idles very roughly, seems as though it's erratically misfiring or binding somehow. If I try to rev the engine, it stumbles and doesn't rev up smoothly and consistently. There also seems to be a kinda faint grinding noise from behind the intake manifold. When driving it seemed to rev up ok, but it didn't like holding over 2000rpms without the resistance of accelerating. Any ideas of what could be wrong? It kinda seems like a sensor, or vacum related, and that's what I'm leaning towards, but it also feels like there's something with the torque converter maybe, idk.

mine is kind of doing the same thing but, when you try to slow down is when mine bucks and chokes and I have no power till like 2200 2330 rpms. I am leaning towards a head gasket for the power and maybe a shifter cable??? I am stuck too help!

Sounds like your torque converter is locking up and staying locked. I am not sure on Fords but I am ase master tech who works mainly on GM's, but the first thing I would check is your lockup. It doesnt sound engine related when you say it shudders, it sounds more like its stuck in lockup, that will cause a major shudder and try to kill the engine when you come to a stop. I know GM's have a lockup solenoid inside the trans that can be replaced. I would check a manual and see if the AOD has something similar. Someone on here might know. My mustang is a stick so I have little experience with the AOd, other than when they occassionally come into the shop, and we dont usually go inside fords. I could check my manuals at work if noone else can help you.
