ah ha, thats what i needed to know, the maf is most likely the culprit. it sounds like its not responding to the change in air charge velocity. still get the codes pulled, but youre probably going to get a lean condition code which wont tell you much, but its worth a try. after the codes are pulled you can unplug the maf and drive it, see how it reacts, it wont be 100% with it unplugged, but you will definately know if thats the problem, which im pretty sure now it is.

plug wires will also cause the same thing, but i would still have the codes pulled by someone that knows how (not autozone) instead of blowing money on somthing that isnt bad.

That sounds more like plug wires than the cats being clogged. You didn't say it reved fine when it wasn't under load.

Ok all, I've been on vacation but I found the problem. It was my MAF. I cleaned it with alcohol and a tissue and now it works great. Thanks for the help all!!

well when a car under load it will create more heat. with more heat will cause a bad cat to heat up more and cause melting of the ceramic of the insides. when it melts it then cloggs the air flow. with this it then causes massive amounts of backpressure. so much to the point it can stall out the motor.

but if yorue just free reving its not under load so heat isnt as great and air flow will still pass thru the cats. unless the cats are totally shot

plug wires are just a miss and you would see it thru out the rpm range with or without a load. butwith a load you would more likely see it being worse.

but in his case it was his maf being dirty
