How can you tell a synchronizer is going bad?
#11
i was able to get into first, second would pop out and couldnt fast shift it, third was ok, and 4th grinded, 5th was good, and i couldnt even get into reverse... needed a rebuild.. synchros were shot needed a new 4th and reverse gears because of the grinding it damaged them... i would say if you are still having the problem after adjusting the clutch, pull the tranny and bring it to a shop just to get it checked out before it gets any worse

Grinding is really the only way you can tell. It's supposed to use friction to match speeds of the input/cluster/output for the given gear. If material has worn off it can no longer do that so you get grinding. If you keep letting it grind instead of getting it fixed it will eventually wear the engaging teeth down where there is a slope like shape & it will start popping out. The faster you try to slam it into gear the faster it will wear. Unfortunately T5's aren't the greatest at fast engagement.
When you're at an idle in first, how far to you have to let the clutch petal up before it starts grabbing? If it's right at the very start I would be concerned of it needing adjusted, if not I would say the adjustment is fine. As long as it's not right off the floor it's more of a preference thing. I've noticed most people prefer that it disengages halfway down, I feel more comfortable with mine disengaging near the top.
