DON'T be offended, take a little more time typing so its easier to understand. From what i could follow in your post, no that doesn't sound right, the compression tester should've been pushed to a certian psi and held there on its own (unless you're pressing the release button).

Prop open the throttle plate
screw in compression tester
turn the motor over (you unhooked the coil wire, right?) around four times
If your guage isn't like the one I have that holds its place you may need a friend

Valve inside compression gauge is stuck open or release button is stuck open. Get another gauge, they are inexpensive. Remove all plugs, disconnect coil, and check each cylinder.

well i got bored tonight n said hell with it . im pullin motor and trans both out cuz trans is a aod and it slips bad n 1rst . so i got another trans with shift kit and 2000 stall . but main reason tearin all out is cuz my strut towers are rusted ... but on way tearing it apart i did find out why my car sounded like was suckin air. my plenum on back bolt was busted . so yay for me i guess now time to look for a gt40 upper n lower . but also while is out im gonna change all gaskets and maybe bearings and oil pump . any body know good site get go deals on gasket kits n everything else ?

to have good readings you want to make sure your engine is warm. Remove all spark plugs and every cylinder. disable the fuel system and you can either have the throttle stuck open or manually by foot with the pedal. make sure you crank the engine three times. you should get a good reading that way.
