Default Shift Kit Woes

My 90 LX Vert has an AOD, and I can't stand the shift kit that's in it. It only shifts well when you're accelerating hard. If you're in a residential area doing 30-35 and it shifts to OD, it feels like it falls into gear, and klunks when it shifts. First though third gives a good bump, but not like third to OD. My rear end just started howling, and my strong suspicion is that whoever installed the kit had it set up more for strip than street and it's punished the driveline. I like firm shifts, but the klunk is driving me crazy. Is it possible to remove a shift kit once it's been installed, and is it a job I can do (please spare me the "Why would anyone want to do that? I've already explained)? Or can it be adjusted at all? I'm picking up a new rearend with 3:55's, and I hope I can straighten this out at the same time I install the rear end. Thanks.
