Default Rear end

I'm going to change the oil in my rear end on my 89 5.0. I went down to the local auto parts store and they told me my car should have 75/140w gear oil. I noticed on here that everyone seems to run 75/90w oil and i'm just wondering if 75/140w would be ok to run in my rear end? My car jsut started doing 1 wheel burnouts and i wanted to start by changing the oil before i jump to conclusions and replace the clutches.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Time for clutch packs. I'd use the 75/90weight. Go to Ford buy a bottle of friction modifier to go with new clutch packs.

Your best bet on a kit is the M-4700-C, comes with new s spring, carbon fiber clutches and friction modifier, then get your choice of fluid! You can get the M-4700-B but its just a stock rebuild and isnt really for performance applications.

Thats perfect! Thank you very much! Is replacing the clutches a rather simple task? Or is it pretty difficult? Is it just a matter of removing the old clutches and installing new ones? Check backlash?

Thanks for all the info!

you dont need to check the backlash, the diff doesnt even have to come out of the car. It certainly makes the job easier if it IS out, but you dont need to.

Depending on how you want it to perform you do check backlash on the spider gears if not and you get it to tight you will never get the spring back in plus if the it is too loose it wont lock properly and you still have a one wheel peel!

It is a rather simple thing to do an pending the gears mainly (ring gear) it may be impossible to do in the car!
you have to remove the four internal carrier gears after the locking pin and s spring are removed! keep up with which spiders have which shim where they need to stay together unless you are replacing them!
