Mechanical or Electronic Distributor???

Mechanical or Electronic Distributor???
I have an 83 GLX that the previous owner dropped a carbed 5.0 inplace of the factory EFI V6...The problem is the car doesnt run, its gets gas but no spark, And its a huge mess of wires under the hood mainly becasue of all the old EFI system. So i wanna take the cheap and easy way out and buy a regular mechanical vacuum advanced distributor and put that in place of the electronic one, BUT my dad wants me to mess with all the electronics and figure out the wiring nightmare to get it runnin......I like the my idea a helluva lot better, but my dad wont let me buy the new distributor until i get a second opinion....So what do yall think i should do?

RE: Mechanical or Electronic Distributor???
sorry to say this, but in 83 all mustangs were carb.
and there is no possible way to run a carb motor with an electronic distributor.
carb cars have no computer to control the signal from the distributor.
and you cant interchange and mix parts from carb and EFI.
it hast to be one or the other.
so yes, get the right distributor, and find out what year motor it is, because ford changed the cams from solid lifter to roller lifter in 85.
if it has a roller cam you need a distributor from an 85.

RE: Mechanical or Electronic Distributor???
No 'solid' lifters in '84. They were hydraulic.
Carb cars CAN run electronic distributors. Millions did.
Go to the library, get service book for '83. Photocopy the wiring diagram. Then you can chase the wiring down. I think the '84 V-8's used a form of the 'Duraspark' system.
You better make sure of the exact year of the engine as the '85 and later uses a differant gear for distributor than any of the early ones.
