Question TIMING ISSUES???

Hey everyone hows it doin? So i got this 88 5.0 gt 5 speed. I bought it about 2 years ago and blew it up about a year and a half ago. I didnt know much about the car other than its fast as hell. I recently rebuilt the heads after it sat for that year and a half or so. I noticed when the heads were off that it had keith black pistons and there stamped 0.030 over. Im pretty sure the heads r stock but not positive also dont know if it has a cam or not.

After getting everything back together i was playing withe the timing and i couldnt get it to run right until i got the timing all the way to 23 btc. Ive heard of ppl going from 10btc all the way to 16 but never 23. Does anyone have ideas? Is this normal for cars that have been bored out? Could it have a cam that causes this? Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanx

It sounds to me like you didn't remove the spout, or the outer ring on the harmonic balancer has spun a bit on the rubber.

The spout is a sort of jumper that you remove to momentarily take the ecm advance out of the picture while you set your base timing. . Once you get your base timing to where you want it then you put the spout back in.

Cool. I will go try it in a little bit. Thanx for the help. Will i need to adjust it do u think or is it just reading higher because its trying to advance itself?

Absolutly no way to know for sure. You most likely will have to advance it to get it to start with the spout out of it. Just see what happens , if it don't start with out the spout in it advance it a little at a time till you can keep it running at an idle , then use the timing light to set it at 10 or 12 btc.

OMG!!! So i took the spout conecter out and re-did the timing. Holy ****. So ya it only changed it by a couple #'s but it made a world of difference. Faster throttle response, revs out higher and faster, and just over all runs smoother and quite frankly meaner. My 89 convertable wouldnt ever stand a chance against this car. Thanx for all the help guys. Hopefully i dont break anything now.
