Wiring sunpro gauges wiring disaster
Hello all,
First time poster on this thread. I just picked up a 87 notchback Saturday, the car has a 351w carborated with a c4. Now the wiring in this car is a mess, so I'm trying to fix the old owners problems. They had the sunpro voltage meter hooked up to a constant power so it kept draining the battery overnight, now I tried to run the positive wire to the radio accessory but of course the wires are chopped out, what would be an alternative accessory wire to run the positive to? Also the right blinker does not flash it just stays solid any idea? I feel like I get in over my head with this mess, at least the engine and trans are immaculate!
Thanks everyone

Welcome, and congrats on your new stang. I hate electrical problems, but I wired my gauges to a keyed 12v source after the fuse box. It is just for the lighting in my gauges. And one gauge shouldn't drain a battery over night, I think you may have another draw somewhere.
As for the directionals not blinking, have you checked the bulbs on that side. A bad bulb will cause a very slow or no blink like you described.
Edit: I think I have that blinking wrong after thinking about it. A bad bulb would blink faster, less draw on that circuit. But still check them, maybe bad contact between bulb and socket.

Not sure on the 87 but my 93 has a bunch of red/yellow wires under the dash which are switched 12v. Im taking out all the unnecessary bull crap in my car and I have about 3 wires just hanging out waiting on a switch 12v need.

What you want to do for the gauge wiring is buy a 12volt cube relay, use the accessory wire from the stereo wiring as the trigger to the relay switch and run the 12v source straight from the battery. This will turn the gauges on with the ignition. Or you can straight wire the gauges to the battery with a toggle switch. Just don't forget to cut them off.
The light staying constant could be a bad flasher relay, a bad signal switch, a bad bulb, but most usually is a bad ground. Go through and clean up the grounds around the car real good then try it again.

Man there's so many grounds all throughout the harness. Start at the negative side of the battery and work your way back.
To find a specific ground start at the plug for that specific bulb and work your way back from that plug down the harness and clean anywhere that there is a wire bolted to the body.
Cleaning grounds is such a common thing that needs to be done I'm sure someone has a guide of sorts on here somewhere if you search for it.
But if there isn't already a link in the tech articles that would be pretty sweet to start making specific locations for grounds kept in one thread.
