Default E7 heads on a 78 302 block

I was just wondering what head gasket to use. My buddy ran the '78's gasket and has had problems with it. Not sure if it's just tuning the bugs out after gaining all that compression or if there is something different in the gaskets. The gaskets for the 90's are different so that's where the suspision comes from. Might there be something there?
