I have an 87 gt and the speedo only goes to 85mph. A buddy of mine me his speedo out of his lx which reads to 140mph. Will it fit directly in? Ivve got my dash all ripped apart and have everything disconnected but the speedo cable. I cant get that clip off. Any advice?

been there, yes it will be a direct fit, speedos changed after 1989, but you can use it as long as its a 87-93 speedo.
to get the clip off, you need to first unplug the 2 electrical plugs in the back of the cluster, then pull on the cluster slightly, just till you can get your hand behind it, then feel for the cable.
where it attaches there will be a plastic clip, press up on it from the bottom and slide out the cable.

when you put it back in, make sure its clipped in by pulling on the cluster after you got the cable on. if it comes out it isnt clipped on.

Thanks man but i had to put everything back together before the daylight went away. I will rip it apart again tomorrow but i noticed the 140 speedo has a half a circle in the bottom so i wasnt to sure if it would fit. I tried pulling that clip up for over 45 min and nothing happened i stopped because i was just gonna break the thing in half because i was so pissed. Ill work on it again tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

ok, the clip has a raised part closest to the cluster, it needs to be tilted up.
I worded it wrong, as the plastic piece tilts, the whole plastic piece doesnt go up.
I'll draw a pic.

If your friends car is an 90 or newer your need to rewire it to make it work with your car only because you don't have an air bag like he does. If you want a speedo that reads 140 and fits stright into your car then you need it to be an 89. I would look on line like at www.car-parts.com and do a search in your area for a place that my have one for your car. I found one from a mustang police car and it read 160. I got it for 100. Most places want 120 + for one that reads 140. do some hunting and you will find one that works. good luck....

I got it in but i found out it was from a 93 so im gonna take it out. Would it not be wired right cause the car to cut off? It started cutting off on me once i got it in?

I don't think so but could be wrong. I know that your gauges wouldn't work right and your dummy lights wouldn't work right.

what do you mean by cuting off? the engine wants to die, or the needle is bouncing around, or it droped and didnt work anymore?


you wont need to rewire anything, the only thing different is the shape on the bottom, and the 90-93 has the airbag light.

I got the speedo in and now he car cuts off randomly. It happen twice one day. I was just cruising at about 50 and it cut off so i pulled over and let it sit alittle and it started up after about 10 min. Went 1/2 a blcok and it did it again. So i have her in the shop now. The problem is definitely electrical but im not sure if its related to the speedo.
