Default backfires and broken parts..please help

ok heres the short version. 85 GT carb'd manual trans. installed NEW B303, performer RPM(knock off),holley 700 double pumper. now for the problems.....original distributor wont idle right backfires, tried a unilight distributor-ran fine for a few hours then same result. installed a reman OEM distributor-ran fine for a while then same result. now its two sets of wires(one for each distributor),two broken base plates(one is the stock 600 and the other is the double pumper),burned air cleaner, two dead cylinders later and still dont know whats going on with this thing. any help would be cool. main problem here is the backfires and breakage of carb's-this needs to stop, lol. the cam was put in lined up with the factory marks soo can go from there i guess, dont know what is wrong, neither does the owner but it needs to be fixed, lol. valves were torqued to 18 ft lbs, trying to see if maybe a valve was hanging open, still no change. it hesitates bad(before the dead cylinders) and back fired if reved or floored to WOT from idle. please help stop the madness, lol. thnx,Loose.

backfiring means your timing is off. at top dead center on the #1 piston compression stroke where did the rotor point?

did you do your timing with a timing light?
and did you remember to unplug the vacum port to the distributor?

the rotor should point straight back at TDC.

rotor pointed to #1 plug, we used a light, it was set at 10 and 14 degrees BTDC, vaccum was removed (i beleive) if not what will happen(please forgive my ignorance, lol.)

so on a clock position, where did the rotor point?
you say it pointed to the #1 plug, do you mean in the cylinder head (9 oclock) or on the distributor cap?

it should be pointed at the 12 0clock position.

did you double check the firing order too?
13726548 should be it, going counterclockwise.

if you time it with the vacum connected, your 10 degree setting will be more like 16 degrees.

thats why, timing is way off, it should be just a little bit to the right from the 12 oclock position closer to 12:30.

are you doing it right now?

good luck.
