Default Burning oil remedy?

I am burning some oil and have been for some time now. Either rings are wore or more likely valve seals. I was wondering about opinions on slowing the burning some? I had Quaker state 4x4 semi synthetic 10w40 in it and wasn`t too bad. Smoked at start up some that`s it. I switched to Castrol GTX conv. 10w30 last weekend and wow big cloud when it starts and even when I romp on it after idle, like a drive threw or stop light. Could this be just the thinner weight? Synthetic is usually thinner than conv. so I am kinda confused? Is there a better oil for me out there? I seen high mileage oils would that help, like a 15w40, 10w40. Would 15w40 be too much here in Iowa, getting cold, but when the snow flies I will park it for the most part. What do you think? Weight and brand.

thats also a really good point lol Man I swapped to a new 306 i bought after abit man it was buring hords and hords of oil. Clouds when reving in net or under load and man would it smoke bad bad cloud liek i did a burn out lol. Anyways I thought rings/value seals but yes I was abit silly and put my stock pcv valve in the new engine which i had this car for 4 years with 250,000 km and never ever changed the pcv well needless to say it fixed the issue not buring hords of oil now and no more smoke out the tail pipes. Most i think say when you remove the pcv valve and shake it if you hear it clunk back and forth it's good but mine seemed fine but hell it's a $4 part and installs in 2 mins. I was silly and never seen issues with my stock engine until i swapped for a built up 306 and after this time I changed things I should have a long time ago PCV VALVE/FUEL FILTER this are both cheap fixes and should be done once a year you can get both parts for like $10 and 20 mins worth of work in the driveway.
