Smog pump removal
#2
*Edit*
All you really need is a shorter serpentine belt to bypass the smog pump.I assume you no longer have converters, correct?? If you do have converters still, the smog pump cannot be deleted/bypassed because the air from the smog pump is used to create the catalytic reaction & the converters will clog & fail without the pump.As far as the hoses, tab/tad valves, solenoids & crossover pipe goes, you can remove them or leave them in place. The tab/tad/evr solenoids are inside the passenger fenderwell,so no one can see them anyways. If you do remove them, including the crossover pipe, make sure you plug the holes on the back of both heads, where the crossover pipe was attached.Threaded inserts are available that will screw into each head passage after pipe removal. The Ford & Summit Racing part numbers for these inserts are listed below.
(Ford Dealership)
Part # F4ZZ-6E086-A
(Summit Racing)
Part # TFS-51400265
You can also use a 5/8 × 11 allen head or regular bolt or even an old spark plug.Put a dab of sealant on each bolt too.If the pipe doesn't bother you,you can just leave it in place & plug it where the thermactor air diverter valve hose was connected to it.Theres not much clearance between the heads & firewall and the passages in each head are normally caked up with rock hard carbon buildup,so if the inserts/bolts don't seem to be catching any threads when you try installing them, you'll have to clean some of the carbon out of the holes until the bolt will thread in.
A few codes will be set from the removal of all of the smog (thermactor) components, but none of them will cause a check engine light or driveability issue.Theyre called soft codes. If you don't wanna see these codes when you're running a code scan, you can use a 75 ohm 3 watt resistor & insert one in each of the tab & tad solenoid harness plugs, but I wouldn't worry about it myself. The following link explains the smog system in detail.Scroll to post #10 once the link opens.
