Hello, long time lurker first time posting.

Have a 94 Mustang GT 5.0 with an AODE transmission. Its leaking transmission fluid, so I replaced the pan seal and it's still leaking. Seems to be coming from the front end of the transmission close to the motor, but its really hard to see where the leak is coming from. There can't be that many places where it can leak from, can anyone tell me how to diagnose an input shaft seal leak? Are there any other common culprits that I can look at before pulling the entire transmission?

Oh yeah, what a joy it is to replace the transmission oil pan on an automatic mustang, great that Ford didn't think to add a drain plug

Almost no transmissions have a drain plug so its not just ford. But anyways if you are leaking trans fluid from the bell housing pull the dust cover off and check for a plug in the torque converter, I cant remember if they had one or not on those transmissions. If its not leaking from the torque converter drain plug then it is the input seal and youll need to drop the transmission to fix it.

 

The only logical reason I can come up with as to why all manufacturers didn't add a drain plug to the pan is so that it would force you to actually replace the transmission filter.Otherwise alot of owners would probably skip doing this and just drain then add new fluid.......
You are 100% positive its trans fluid and not oil correct?? If the fluid has been in there long enough to cause it to turn dark colored instead of red,it could be a similar color to oil and what is perceived to be trans fluid could be oil instead.The rear main seal is notorious for leaking on the 5.0....I guess you would know the difference though,if its a big enough leak,by the fact that you would have to add fluid to either the trans or oil to the engine to keep it at the correct range on either dipstick.That would verify which fluid it is,atf or oil.......
