1995 Cobra with weird multiple spark issue only with spout connected
Hi Everyone. I have a weird issue that I haven't seen anyone else have. I mostly work on my diesels and have this 1995 Mustang Cobra that has been a great car. Recently, it started blowing TFI modules. The parts were cheap enough and it doesn't do anything when I jump the pins to scan, so I replaced the dizzy and the coil while I was replacing the TFI. I also made my own plug wires and put in new plugs. It does this with new and old parts, so I think we can safely rule out what I replaced. I took it to a mechanic I'm friends with and he said to try the computer. It does the exact same thing. It runs and drives fine with the spout out. I put a few thousand miles on it (spout out) to make sure it didn’t blow the TFI module and it didn’t. Can anyone point me in the right direction for things to test? I just bought an Oscilloscope and am learning how to use it. A link to the video is below. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Sorry about that. The MSD thing was a joke because the car basically made its own somehow. I checked for shorts, but didn't find anything. Everything had continuity that should. From what I saw on the Oscilloscope everything was normal too. I didn't see different readings with the spout plugged in. I'll probably start tracing wires from the TFI module to the coil when I have time.
I got one with a lifetime warranty when I replaced the original. The original is the one I'm turning in the video. It was probably still good, but the car doesn't do anything when I jumper the connector to read codes and my other scanners do not work.
I used thermal paste. It came with the TFI module. I've seen you can use ant-seize in its place, but I've never heard dielectric grease. I hope that's not why TFI modules fail so often. There are youtubes explaining how to apply and people have tested anti-seize vs the proper paste. It's basically the same stuff used on CPUs in computers.
