Default H pipe exhaust

ok guys here is a stupid question. But how does an H pipe work? I want to understand it before i purchase. From my understanding is it hook on to headers, then you can run it with or without cats (or with the free flow cats) then does the mufflers come next or the h pipe? when does the produmps or whatever that is comes in. Sorry Im so new to mustangs and not even mechanically inclined. BUT, I am willing to learn and thats what makes a difference. I'm sure we all started there at one point.

Thanks
