i was once told it reduces your drivetrain loss by approx. 5%... can anyone confirm this?

I wouldnt doubt it... 8-10lb's off of a spinning driveshaft could make a difference...

I don't know for sure, but I would agree with that IF you'd already taken steps to stiffen the chassis. If not, the rest of the car will be flexing around it regardless.
