studdering mustang, vacuum problem or cats
hey all...i just bought a 93 mustang with 180xxx miles on it, and was wondering about a problem i have been experiencing. when i step on the gas after the car is running, it studders....very non responsive to me stepping on it, but if i put my foot down really slow(making the rpms go up as slow as i can) i have no problems. so i decided to replace the TPS(throttle position sensor, for those who dont know) and that didn't really help the problem. so i bought mass air flow sensor cleaner, which helped somewhat. I just had the exaust looked at in fear that i had clogged cats, which i did. so i bought a bbk x pipe with cats which is on its way.
in examining my o2 sensors, i realized that they looked like they were from 1993, thus leading to all the previously listed problems i would assume. My question is...are there any other parts you would recommend replacing in order to get this thing up to par? also if someone has a vacuum diagram or something to show me where all theses vaccuum lines are supposed to go that would be greatly appreciated. the guy that had this car before me knew NOTHING about cars...he sure kept it clean though...lol.
Thanks,
Mike

Air filter if dirty or clogged , check & clean tb., remove & clean egr & spacer with tb.& choke cleaner, check vac lines going to map sensor on firewall, check sparkplugs, wires, cap, rotor for anything that might look out of the ordinary. ( 1st I would Definitely change fuelfilter under car, use some fuel injector cleaner & good fuel. ) I find doing the simplest & easiest solves your problems most of the time. Tune-up things like air filters, fuel filters, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cost much less than 02 sensors, map sensors, maf sensors, egr's.For Instance...Most people that arent mechanically inclined wouldnt believe what a single fuel fouled or carboned up spark plug would do, let alone a whole set. Changing them out can mean the diff between running & dead in the water! Same goesfor the fuel filter! Anyways hopefully I have helped you out, & Good Luck!

[align=left]So i changed fuel filter and spark plugs today, which helped a bit also. air filter is clean, and i dont even know how the vacuum configuration should be. it seems to be all messed up honestly. how would i know if my cap and rotor are bad? I know thats its something stupid, because the car starts right up...thats why i bought it. I really think that the vacuum lines are messed up though. i'll keep you posted about how everything is going. thanks!

spray carb cleaner around the vaccum tree and lines while car is idling.
if rpm's increase, u got a leak.
i would invest in an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and mount a gauge on it (i actually just did this today myself)

Just a thought, also maybe pull your injectors make sure you dont have anything blocking the inlet screen. Had something similar happen to me that fixed my problem. Be sure if you do, not to pull to hard or you might break the pintle cap.

what do you guys think about seafoam? someone recommended i put it in the main vacuum line that leads to all the cylinders...
also i have a kal equip scan tool which is supposed to be able to read my codes but doesn't seem to recognize that it is even plugged into the car. it works great on obd II though...lol.
