well 1st you have to decide what your budget is. paint isny cheap and certain colors are more expenxive than others. and decide wether you want just a quick paint job to make it look decent or something that a show stopper

i had figured on spending around $750 for material only... primer/color/clear etc no labor
im thinking metallic purple and black would look really sharp...
doesnt necessarily have to be a show stopper but i definately want it to look good.
ive seen a lot of house of kolor paint used on tv, is that a good route to take?

I like spraying Urethane-acrylics. I think you can only get it in solid colors though. It's almost like house paint when it dries. It's flexible. If you spray it right you don't have to wet-sand or buff-out the paint job after painting. It's holds up against rock chips and weathering pretty good. But it's really messy(STICKS TO EVERYTHING IN YOUR GARAGE!!!). Thet's just what I've experinced. And I'm NO body shop tech!
Yeah the pre-mixed stuff is junk. Mainly because of how the paint is. I looked into that too. But it's a laquer paint. From everything that I've read... Laquers have alot of negative qualities. It's hard to spray. It runs easy. Takes multiple coats. Orange peels easily. And doesn't last very long unless you buff your car out alot. It's kinda a high maintence paint.
The best book I've found that taught me alot was at auto zone. It's called... "How To Paint Your Car On A Budget" By SA Design. It'll have a corvette stingray on the cover. It's all color pages, and ACTUALLY tells you haw to do everything. I've got plenty of books that doesn't explain stuff and put it into terms that someone who didn't go to school for autobody. This one does. I recomend it!
Oh... and around my area for everything I needed to paint my last truck with urethane was like $120'ish. That included 1-gallon of paint, reducer, and fish-eye remover(good for gutting fish.LOL!)(sorry that was so lame)

personally never used it, talked to people that sprayed it and told me it was tricky to paint and tood a few times to get it down. dont remember why they said it was hard. house of color is pretty expensive too. ive always used dupont. some people like it some dont. ive had good luck with it, shines good sprays good and is pretty reasonable on price. in school we used sikkin's. that stuff is good but costs a little bit more. unless the purple you choose is a weird one i think you should make it ok with 750 for paint materials. i would defanatly go with base-clear too unless your on a budget because single stage is like half the price almost. you could try calling up a few local paint shops and get their opinion too. thats just my 2 cents

dupont. laquer is a good paint, runs and orange peels and mainly all negative things you said are user error... use acryllic enamel, its the most user friendly. black is more expensive than met. purple. i believe its $400 for Amherst Metallic(1998 C5 color). so, basically 250-350 for a fox with purple metallic.

I used Dupont when I painted mine, and like jake said, I have about 350 in paint, but I used two tone and just spruced it up a bit. If you can find an automotive paint shop, sometimes they will give you a break, especially if they know you are doing the work yourself.
