Default manual brakes???

anybody have any input on this... i am trying to get a clean look in my engine bay and getting rid of the giant vacuum thing would help. i know older cars had manual brakes but don't know if this is any different. i have also read that this isn't a mod you want ot do unless you have some nice big aftermarket brakes. either way any opinionsfrom someone who has used them would be great, thanks.

I have man. brakes. Five lug conversion with big baer disk up front, i still have drums in rear and also a proportioning valve. it is not bad, it makes the pedal stiff, but to me it is really not that bad. It is worth the clean look, but i dont drive my car daily either.

Default RE: manual brakes???

I run manual on my 67, disc up front and drums in the rear, and it's not too bad. The effort for manual is gonna be determined by m/c piston diameter and the diameter of all the brake pistons. Less m/c piston surface area(smaller diameter) and more brake piston surface area(larger piston diameters) will make less pedal effort, but you have to push the pedal down farther to move the volume of fluid necessary to accuate the brakes. A good brake setup with the m/n piston sized matched to the brake's piston size and you'll have modest effort and excellent braking. It's all about pressure control, let's say you have 2sq in of m/c piston surface area(this is all arbitrary, the numbers aren't accurate but an example), and a caliper with 4 pistons, each on has 4sq in of surface area(16sq in total). If you push down on a brake pedal that's a 5:1 lever with 20lbs of force you generate 100lbs of force at the m/c, with 2sq in of surface area that's 50psi you generate in the brake system. 2 pads in a 4 spiton caliper is 2 pistons per pad, at 8sq in for each set of 2 pistons at 50psi, that's 400lbs of force that each pad presses on the disc with. If you press down with 60lbs of force at the same pedal and make 150psi, each pad presses with 1,200lbs of force. You can see how if you change around the piston diameters and the brake pedal leverage you can create a system with little pedal effort and huge clamping force, or if you mess up, a system with a lot of pedal effort and little clamping force

I put Wilwood's kit on my 67 and used the reccomended m/c. It works really well. And they have a whole crapload of m/c's and brake kits, and you don't even have to get a kit, you could call and talk to them and get m/c's and individual brake parts to get something more custom tailored. But the kits are nice, takes all the guess work out. I'm using the stock brake pedal on my car too, but they also sell brake pedals I think
