if i cannot downshift from 5th or4th to 3rd is that commonly a tranny problem or a clutch problem?

 

You should be able to down shift with no problems as long as you aren't trying to do something unreasonable like turning5000 rpm in forth and try and shift into third. Itcould be the clutch causing your problem but my guess is if you've gota lot ofhard miles on your transmission it's going to be your syncronizers. If your clutch was your problem then you should have issues up or down shifting.
