Default 88 5.0 Running Rich, Where to start?

Well the GT I bought after getting the timing chain cover fixed with JB weld (only temp just to make sure it ran fine and stuff) it smokes kinda bad. To me it smells like its burning oil and running rich. The smoke seems black with maybe some a little blue. The oil smells like it has gas in it to.

My uncle says he thinks it's only running rich, not burning oil. Where should I start to solve this problem? When I turn the key on the CEL doesn't come on for a few seconds like every car so I think I might get it checked to see if it's throwin a CEL. Does that sound like a good place to start on the running rich problem?
BTW, it's an 88.
Thanks

Well the GT I bought after getting the timing chain cover fixed with JB weld (only temp just to make sure it ran fine and stuff) it smokes kinda bad. To me it smells like its burning oil and running rich. The smoke seems kinda blueish. The oil smells like it has gas in it to. Then after driving it around the block a few times, the engine was still cold keep in mind, i noticed the oil pressure gage seemed low. Now it seems like there is a knock that speeds up when reved. I'm thinking I'm going to just rebuild the engine and then try to figgure out the running rich problem it it is still there.

My question is, what would you all reccomend for a complete rebuild for under... lets say $6-700 in parts. I'll be doing it my self but with some help from my uncle who is good with cars and stuff. I'd like some recomendations for what to get. It's going to be my DD when I get it going so keep that in mind. I don't need it to be a lot more powerful than stock cause I'd like to keep the gas mileage better. I do like the sound of a not to agressivly cammed 302 though

BTW, it's an 88.
Thanks
......600 to 700 huh.....not gonna happen expecially if you get it apart and find out you need machine work......hell when I redid mine the machine work alone totalled close to that....furthermore if you need machine work then you'll need a complete rebuild kit with pistons and a cheap kit which is just that and pistons won't be forged will be between250 to 300and probably won't come with a roller cam which are quite expensive that is of course you want to reuse the old one but it's not worth the hassle to reuse the old parts if there are a lot of miles on it...........and you'll still need to buy all necessary fluids and or gaskets.......you'll find out quickly once you get it apart your price range won't be that realistic[&:]

oh. Well what is a realistic price range for parts only? That's not including machining.

well it'll really depend on the quality of parts used and if you need to have it bored...cause then you'll need pistons which will raise cost.....you can't really get a exact cost until you tear it down and inspect all for necessary work needed to be performed........but with a tear it down rebuild/overhaul paint it blue slap it back together and call it new jobber....and cut ridge on top of cylinder wall and hone it......I did a 83 mustang motor I plan to put in my Bronco II for under 350.00 but that was a non roller cam motor...but if your blowing the blues you really need to tear it down and inspect it and have the proper machine work done cause to do all that work and cut corners just doesn't make sense if in a few thousand miles it'll blow blues again....a decent rebuild with quality parts pending machine work will run anywhere from 1000 to 1500

It's not cheap. Just for a stock rebuild, .30 over bore, and a good valve job I payed $2250 ($1750 after core exchange)for my motor. Its worth it in the end like mjr46 was saying. I was gonna just do a overhaul on my '84 donor engine, but when I talked to the guy who was gonna build it he was saying I would almost be better off buying one of his motors (he's ford crazy!!!). You never really know whats up untill you crack that baby open and check everything out. Get it done up right, and you'll have noworries later, thats all I told myself when saving, and saving, and saving lol. I hope everything works out great, and your stang is back on the road stronger than ever!

Alright thanks. I'm going to have my uncle look check it out soon and see what he thinks (he's the mechanic of the family) and then I'll go from there. I'll post progress on here...with pictures I'm on ranger-forums.com and atvmagonline.com and they all like pictures and I can tell you all do to so yeah.

I've fixed the headliner already with some spray adhesive untill I get a new one. I was trying to take it out to fix it but I found out that I couldn't figgure it out lol so its got some wrinkles in it..

A deer was hit by the front left before I bought it. It pushed the fender back to where the door wouldn't open. I've adjusted the fender but the bumper is pushed in weird where it meets the fender. I need to figgure out why its like that. I'm going to get a new front bumper, where could I find one?

It has very little rust on it that I will fix correctly when it's runnin and ready for body work

Bump, Edited the first post. Also wondering, how much are those wheels worth? Their 15" Center Line wheels, don't know the width.

Blue is oil, white is coolant, black is rich. To my knowledge. My uncle who knows a lot about cars said it was running rich and he doesn't think its burning oil.
