Mass airflow sensor problems
Hi all,
I recently got a '94 cobra. It has a mass air sensor by pro flow, which I think is probably really a recalibrated stock sensor. In any case, the sensor has apparently failed. It sometimes will shut the engine off when it's plugged in, and other times it runs ok but has a surge at WOT with the sensor plugged in. Overall, driving with it unplugged is not much different than driving with it plugged in when it works ok, except that with it unplugged there's a really bad bog/surge at WOT.
So, I got to messing around with used stock sensors. One thing I noticed is that the stock sensors all have an arrow on the top of the sensor indicating direction of air flow. The way my car has the aftermarket sensor housing set up causes the sensor to be mounted such that the airflow goes the wrong way. Is this a problem? I'd normally think that the sensor wouldn't care, since it's basically measuring how much the heated wires are cooled by passing air. Then again, the arrow must be there for some reason...

The mass air sensor I tried that seems to work best is out of a '90 thunderbird super coupe. If I remember right, those had 24 lb/hr injectors. My car has a set of injectors that are kind of light blue/teal on top. There are no bands of color on the injectors. The previous owner listed 24 lb injectors as a modification that had been done, but I think the car would have come with 24's stock. That being the case, the housing for the airflow meter presently on the car will not permit installing it the right way due to the fact that it necks down a little toward one end, which causes it to only be installable one way...the wrong way. I don't know how long this has been the case, but I would not be surprised if it had been wrong most of the life of the car.
