Default Are you serious??

so today i was talking to one of the local machine shops owners and asked several questions.

i asked about knife edging the crank and if it was worth it
i asked about gt40 heads
i asked how much it was cost to bore my block, assemble it, new bearings etc etc

his answers to the above were.

1. its not worth at all
2. what are are your goals? my response 12's anything 12's with a lightweight car i can drive to and from the track. his reply was your going to need at least 400hp to do that, and a set of afr's will you get you there. then proceeded to tell me that a stroker with a good set of afr's or brodix heads would get me there. im sitting here thinking no ****
3. so i got back on the subject on how much it would be for them to assemble my shortblock, to bore it, and to put new bearings in it. guess how much they said it would be???
2500 at least
of course my response was WHAT?

then he got back on the conversation of how i needed to go to a bigger motor to run 12's. He even starting mentioning getting a big block stroking it and putting a set of aluminum heads on it. i said to run 12's?? i said with that kind of money that thing better run ****ing 9's knocking on 8's

after a little while i told him i had to go. so needless to say i dont think i can afford that shop

yes a knife edge is worth it, it cuts through the oil quicker.
Number 2 tells you he is a total idiot
#3. 10 bucks a whole bored. 125 a side for decking. 20 vatted. Maybe 50 for honing. bearings 150. polish and or turn crank and polish rods maybe 100 or 150. press rods maaybe 100 bucks. total seal rings 100 or so. Arp rod bolts 50. Pistons new say 500 for a mid-range estimate. I got a set you could have for a hundred. Assembly 125. installation of cam bearings 75. balancing 140. If I am not missing anything, he was looking for about a 150% mark up over my builder.

interesting conversation. sounds like the same type of guy i talked to the other day. i was tellin him i just rebuilt my T5 in the mustang a little while ago and he says

"you had to rebuild your t5?!?!? what do you have a 500+ hp mustang for just not know how to drive? thats amazing you needed to rebuild a transmission as legendary as the T5"

he was 100000000% dead serious

i reply "umm, yea i rebuilt my t5...so i guess you consider the mustang t5 a good trans?"

"oh yea dude, i wish i had bout 1300 for a new one right now, id sure as hell put one in my aod stang."

i reply " yea thats too bad you dont have 1300 for a new one...cause i'd sell you mine for 1000."

"dude, if i had met you like 3 weeks ago i would have sooooo done it! i just dropped 1k on some ported E7's, b303 cam and a cobra intake with throttle body and everything!!!"

i reply, "oh wow dude, i would have sold you my ported e7's, b cam and ported typhoon for 900"

"oh man...i knew i should have waited since its winter and all, then i would have so would have taken you up on your kick *** deals...man that sucks! hey dude can i get your number when im ready for my 5speed swap. ill still buy your trans later if its for sale later on"

handed him my info and walked out the door damn near biting a hole in my tongue trying not to laugh at this tard....

This is some of the craziest pricing I have seen, is this what you pay or have paid?

When I bought my 71 351 block from my builder it was painted and bored. He ran a hone through the cylinders and vatted it real quick. Then he told me 125 dollars. He lost money on machining. Balancing was 140. Assembly 125. I can't really remember what it was for the cam bearings to be installed, 75 i think
This was in 05.

My friends that use another builder pay 400 bucks to have a block bored, honed, decked and vatted. That may include bearings. I never asked. This was in 07.
