Default Restore my A/C Compressor

I know the majority of you guys toss out your AC units for the gains, but since I moved to the High Desert, I will need to get my AC working again on my 94 GT. The compressor took a crap years ago and I would like to replace it. I wanted to get input from you guys to see what other things I should change while im at it. What is the AC accumulator used for? Should I stay away from used compressors? Any sites you guys recommend to purchase these parts? Any special tools if I do this on my own, although I don't have experience?

Thanks!

you will want a new compressor its better for the money and when you buy one to keep the warranty intact you'll have to get a new accumulator, dryer, and orifice tube

if your a/c compressor had a internal failure, you'll need to replace the accumulator/reciever dryer = it removes moisture from the system and when open to atmosphere fo short period of time the desicant bag goes bad = replace it, also you'll need to flush the system completely with a/c flush if failure was internal then after flush install new parts and then draw into a vaccum for an hour or so and then install proper amount of ester oil if using 134a then add proper amount of refrigerant..oh fyi, I can't remember if in 94 system was r-12 or already 134a from factory, but if it was r-12 originally and convereted to 134a 80 percent of the r-12 system capacity is to be the amount of 134a used now in the system.

Thanks for all the info. Is the dryer and orifice tube interconnected with the Accumulator or near it? Not sure what they look like.

The bearing on the compressor began to fail even when it was not active, started making grinding noises, so I just bypassed it so the whole system is still in tact and it is R-134a. I guess i can try to flush the system with the current parts intact, then install the new parts so everything is clean?
