Default my car still pings

Added a new fpr, 42lb injectors and 75mm pmas and the car still pings with the 1.5 kb. I don't mean while boosting either, just driving it to the shop.

The car pulls 21 hg of vacuum. replaced act, ect. tps at .99. new plugs and wires.

The only thing I can think of is the cobra intake recently added maybe drawing in more air or maybe the 02s are bad and not throwing a code. It does it while cold too though.

I contacted my tuner. He said he will do me a chip until we can get it on the dyno. He still thought i should be able to drive it though.

so what do you think?

If I am not mistaken you are still running the stock iron heads. With iron heads they are unable to dissipate heat efficiently, especially now since you have an SC, which adds a ton of heat. With my 95GT(not modded one), it would ping like crazy with 10 degrees timing and 87 octane and that's STOCK. Your best bet would be to start saving for some aluminum heads. Trust me, your pinging problems will be long gone. A couple of quick Q's though: What octane gas are you running?(93 would be great + maybe a gallon or two of 110 race gas; if available from a nearby hotrod shop) Do you currently have a 255lph inline fuel pump? What are your plugs gapped at and what heat range?(.025-.032 would be ideal with two heat ranges colder; Autolite 3923 is a good one)What is your current TOTAL timing set at(for reference mine is set to 18)

thanks for the reply
the heads are still stock.
I am running 93 with the nos octane booster. It said 6 points on the bottle.
I am think you hit it with the timing. The car has no tune as of now and is running stock timing tables. (6 initial) When my tuner gets back into town he is going to burn me a chip to bring the total timing down.
The thing that gets me is that the car ran better with 19lb injectors. (I haven't boosted any, only normal driving). The cal'd meter is with 42s is pining more.
The spark plugs are autolite 23 gaped to 28. I had 24s but thought the 23s might reduce ping so I switched them out. I pulled one out today and it looked good. Like the car had been running rich almost. The were mostly tan with a little black on them.

I think it is coming back to the transfer function of the meter not bein programmed in the eec and the total timing as the culprit though. I will look into some aluminum heads if the chip doesn't help. May even make a trip to the casino to see if I can't win them this weekend.lol

Good deal! I believe stock Total timing is around 30ish, but not quite sure. With that said, you want to retard the timing below 10 degrees initial. I think a tune will do you wonders. Everything seems fine with your fuel. But do you have a 255lph fuel pump or a 190lph at worse? Also, if $$ is tight, just look into some cheap Procomp's, Patriot, Flotek, or used aluminum heads. They're not great, but they are better than stock. They will eliminate your pinging. I am glad you finally got boosted. Have fun!

thanks, yeah it has a 255. I will repost after he burns the chip. One thing i did learn while searching is that the car doesn't have a a9l eec. I thought all 5-speeds did. This one has a d3d. I looked it up and there are a lot of different computers for the foxes.

I honestly did not know about the various Fox computers. But I am assuming he can burn you a chip that would be just as effective in an a9L computer. I hate detonation. It can do a load to your motor and fast. When I took my car to the dyno a few weeks back, it did not detonate, but it ran out of fuel basically around 5000rpm and was running an A/f of 14:8@5600rpm, right when I hit peak HP.

Tomorrow is the day for the chip. He is going to charge me half the price for the dyno tune tomorrow since it is not going on the dyno. When we the clutch and exhaust on the car, I am going back for the dyno. The thing that kills me is how cheap all this is to do. I mean its not cheap but, it is at least 33% cheaper than the next lowest quote I have I had. He told me I could just datalog the stuff with my wideband and he would re-burn a couple of times for free. Oh course, since he is 30 minutes away, I am just going to get the tune in one day. Anyways . . . we will see how it goes.

Do you have a timing retard module? If not, you may want to invest in one. The only time I get ping is at around 6K at WOT in forth gear at the track. If I'm not running race gas, I get a lil ping and I just back down the timing a bit.

I didn't go with the timing module because I haven't been boosting the car. It has pinging issues without boosting. I figured it wouldn't help.

I got the chip that will lower the timing though.. He said he put a real conservative tune on it.
It is the eliminator chip so, he put three tunes on it.
One is what he thinks it should be, one is 5% more fuel and the other is 5% less fuel.
He told me to come back when I get my car ready for the dyno and we will dial it in right.
For 200 bucks, I believe I cam out pretty good.
When the sun goes down a little, I am going to stick it in and see what it does.

At first I had my doubts about this guy because I had never heard of him and his website on the net needs some work but, the 680 horse Shelby he has in the garage has me thinking he knows what is going on. He also said he tuned an 1100 horse motor that came in third at the Montgomery Pinks race a while back. Once he tried to sell me a tweecar and said he would tune it, I felt like he knew what was going on. I feel a bit better now.
