Mass Air Problems

Mass Air Problems
I have a C&L mass air housing & I beleive the stock sensor. when I bought the car, the filter was in the fender. last week, I bought a huge K&N cone filter & put it on the end of the mass air. the car was already warmed up when I put it on because did it at the store. it ran ok but idled rough. then it sat for a week & yesterday I started it up & it would barely run cold. from what I have read, the C&L does not like cone filters. today I decided to unplug the mass air just to see what it would do & to my surprise, it idles much better, throttle response is greatly improved & it feels like I picked up 30+ hp/tq with the mass air unplugged. of course my CEL is on & I have some "light" part throttle issues but overall I am stunned.
my question is, will it hurt anything if I drive it around unplugged for a while until I can get another mass air system?
also what brand would you guy's recommend?
sorry for the long post & thanks in advance for any help...

If you want a new MAF look into the Pro-M 80 or Pro-M 90, Pro-M 80 will be more than enough. They have 360 degree sampling for the best possible reading, and they are arguably the best MAF manufacturer on the market, though they are expensive.

I did not oil the filter & I have cleaned the meter several times. the previous owner was a stangnet member & I found his account on that site & saw where he had posted about the same problems when putting a cone filter on the end of the meter. I definitely want to get rid of the C&L & I like the idea 360* sampling of the Pro-m 80 that Liquid_02 mentioned. the C&L sampling tube just doesn't make sense & I can see why it would have a hard time getting a clean reading. Thanks for the repliesb
