so i am goin to look at a rear end on sunday and the guy said it has 4.10s and a rebuilt trac lock is there a way to know if the rear is good without it bein in the car

 

pull the cover off of it and see what it has. I have seen many people get ripped off on rearends.

the axles shouldn't move no more than a 1/4 inch in and out.

I have seen people that can check for slack and tell you what the tolerance is. I am not that good.

 

ok he said it has new brakes and longer wheel studs

 

sounds okay, most people that I have seen get ripped were buying rear ends with spools in them.

 

ok would it be stamped on the gears what it is or would it be easier to just spin it and count how many time the axle moves

 

Take the cover off look. Count teeth on gears divide one into the other. Will be able to see if anything is broken. Take dial indicator check backlash. Run magnet in bottom see if there is any metal .

 

ok also would u be able to tell if they make noise or anything

 

you won't be able to tell if it makes noise, stuff like such I don't spend alot on so if it is bad, you won't take a huge hit

 

well he wants 250 for it i am talkin to him about trading a motor that needs rebuilt or m stock rear
