Stay auto, or swap to stick??

Stay auto, or swap to stick??
Well, after many trips to the strip with no real change to my 60' times, I've done some thinking. I NEED A CONVERTER!!!!! Here's the catch. I'm kinda iffy on using a 2500+ stall on the street (I drive like an old lady ) and even though this old junk yard special C4 hasn't let me down, reving 3000rpm for 30 min to and from work gets lame. I wouldn't mind the consistency of the auto, but the high rev's and lose converter might leave me frustrated with dding the car all summer. So what I'm trying to get to is, would it be better to just save a little more, and do a 5-speed swap??? I'm ballparking it at $1500 Canadian?? Let me know what you think, or if you have any advice! Thanx for the replies !

I dropped a full second off my 1/4mile ET just from the transmission swap.
I just over $2,000 american for my swap, but it was worth it. I too wanted a auto for racing, and my nitrous use, but the fact that it would be hard to drive on the street with a big stall (i was going more for 3500 stall) I decided to go with the 5 speed.
Its up to you, but I think the only way a auto is worth it, is a fully built auto, trans cooler, and a big stall, which is much more expensive then the 5 speed swap.

That's what I was thinking too. With all the add ons (stall, valve body, cooler, possibly TB) I'd still have all stock internals . I know I'm still all stock but a boneyard trans will only last so long with me ripping before it'll need a rebuild. Were a T5 if shifted properly should do well for my setup, even with stock stuff for now. Thanx for the quick reply (my finder just got operated on and i can't hardly type lol). Any idea's/thoughts on good setups is greatly appreciated!

I just went with the promotion powertrain T5 cobra transmission, with a core transmission (I got a busted one off craigslist for free) they are $750.
heres there website where you can buy every part you need if you really wanted to.

Shweeeeeet!! I got lot's of time to get at er', I just don't wanna buy junk. I'll most likely try to get a cheap core (world class would be shnice) and take it to the guy who built my other stuff. He's only down the road, and he's a good guy, so may as well let him tear into it. Thanx again for the reply/web link. The forum never fails lol!!!

I'm up in Canada, so it's kinda hard to even find a used T5 for under $500. Although I did find a Tremec 3550 for $550... Plus I wanted to get a new Mcleod 800 series clutch, pressure plate, clutch fork, Frpp flywheel, steeda adjustable cable, and probably a rebuild. So I dunno if I'll be able to keep it under $500 w/o buying a completely used trans flywheel to output shaft. Who knows, maybe I'll find something dirt cheap (knock on wood) . Thanx for the replies!

WOW!!! I haven't really called around, I've just skimmed through kijiji lol. I told my dad to call a guy his work deals with and he's keeping his eyes open, but he was saying they are pretty scarce/pricey. I got all winter to find something so I'm not too worried, but it's kinda sketchy looking and all you see is a tumble weed blow by your screen lol. Good luck on the hunt/swap. If you're in southern Ontario, check out the local kijiji.ca ads.. Some decent stuff pops up now and then .
