Default She runs! but doesn't move PLEASE HELP

I finally was able to start my new build up last night. It sounded great and everything went as planned. However the clutch doesnt engage until I push it down about 3 in. The clutch in the 82 is smaller than the clutch in the 86 that I put in to my car. I tried adjusting my clutch cable by pulling up then pushin down but it didnt fix the problem. Help me please! I want to drive it

The clutch doesn't ENGAGE until you push it down 3 inches??? So when it's all the way up, it's like it's all the way to the floor, then when you push it down 3 inches it engages? What's it do when it's all the way to the floor? I don't think you're explaining something right.

Sorry I will try to explain better. When I push on the pedal it is extremely easy to push until it has moved downwards a few inches then I feel resistance. I feel slack in the cable basically. And I tried pulling the pedal up then pushing down a few times to take the slack out and I can now engage the trans but it grinds unless i stomp on the clutch pedal

Oh ok I just now understood how I worded that. No I would have a huge problem if that were happening. Not quite sure how that would be possible. When I said the clutch doesnt engage I meant the clutch cable doesnt have tension until I push down three inches
